Whilst at work I was bitten by a snake, do I have grounds for compensation?
My desk is located in a large open plan packaging department. A week ago I picked up a snake which was three feet from my desk and which a colleague said was a slow worm. It turned out to be an adder which bit me three times resulting in an ambulance being called. I was rendered unconscious, had to have anti-venom serum and spent the night in the hospital's ICU department. I've been on sick leave for the past week, do I have grounds for compensation?
Your employer has a duty to provide a safe environment for you whilst at work. Under normal circumstances this would not include an environment which contains poisonous snakes! If your employers can show that they had taken all reasonable steps to protect you against foreseeable hazards they could succesfully defend your claim but it would depend on the facts. This is something we would be very happy to investigate further for you and I can ask one of our legal counsellors to call you to go through your case in detail. The service is confidential, there are no costs associated with the call and there is no obligation of any kind. Please reply to this email if you want to use this service.
