I had a bad electric shock at work but was not given the correct care by my employers. Can I take action regarding this? by Maria Mason — last modified 2008-07-16 20:57
I received a bad electric shock at work while carrying out plumbing duties in 2006. Despite informing my employer I was just encouraged to have a cup of tea and carry on with my normal duties which included driving. After feeing quite unwell all this time and experiencing a numbness in the left side of my face I decided to phone the NHS help line where I was instructed to attend hospital in the next ten minutes, that I should be escorted there and under no circumstances should I drive. In hospital I received treatment and an ECG. Although there were no long term effects can I take action on the basis I was not given the correct duty of care? After this incident two extra items of ppe were added to our ppe sheet as a direct result of my accident.

Whilst entering a fish and chip restaurant I slipped on the step and broke my leg. Is the owner liable? by Maria Mason — last modified 2008-07-10 22:36
I was at a fish and chip restaurant and after I had ordered my food I went outside as there's not much space inside. When the food was ready I entered the restaurant again and slipped on the step. I fell over and broke my leg and have been put in plaster for six weeks. Half of the step has some kind of metal cover on it and is slippery. Is the owner liable?

Whilst in a rented cottage I missed a step leading from the kitchen to the porch and fell and fractured my arm and injured my shoulder. Can I claim for this? by Maria Mason — last modified 2008-06-26 11:58
I was recently on holiday in a rented cottage. After being there for two hours we were leaving the cottage when I missed a small step leading from the kitchen to the main entrance porch. My foot was half on the step and half off and I could not regain my balance and I fell on the tiled floor and fractured my upper arm and injured my shoulder. The kitchen and porch were tiled in the same coloured stone tile, no indication or marking to show different levels on opening kitchen door. This was reported to the owners of the cottage and I was taken to hospital to be treated. Can I claim for this?
The fire exit door at work came off in my hand, I fell backwards and broke my arm. Can I ask my employer to pay me more than just SSP? by Maria Mason — last modified 2008-06-25 16:48
Whilst closing the fire exit door at work the handle came off in my hand and I fell backwards, breaking my arm. I was hospitalised overnight and operated on. I later had to have my arm pinned. I have been signed off work for 12 weeks and am currently receiving SSP. I'm not sure that I am wanting to make a claim against my employer as I am afraid of being victimised and having my contract terminated. I am more concerned about only receiving SSP and was wondering whether I would be within my rights to ask my employer if it was possible for him to pay me a bigger percentage of my normal weekly wage during my absence. I am not aware of an Accident or an Incident form being completed for this incident as I was taken straight to A&E and I certainly haven't signed anything.

My daughter had an accident at her school when she slipped and fell in a hole on the school field and twisted her right foot hearing a crack. She was then told by a supply teacher to walk to the nurse's office despite informing the teacher that she thought she had broken her foot. I took my daughter to casualty where we were told she has broken the 5th metatarsal and the arch of her foot. Is the school liable for this and can I make a claim?

Child cut hand badly on sharp area of handrail: can we claim compensation and if so what for? by Conrad Murray — last modified 2008-06-09 09:53
My family and I were to attend a baptism celebration today when my daughter, running her hand along a public handrail in a pedestrian area sliced her finger open. My daughter who is only 3 years old was very upset, there was lot of blood and we had to take her to A&E to have her finger seen to as we couldn't get it to stop bleeding after dashing to a chemist and getting bandages. The finger did not need stitches but steristrips to hold the wound together and my daughters dress and my shirt were covered in blood. Altogether not the happy day we had planned. My question is, who is culpable for this and should I pursue this. It seems that a handrail that should be designed for hand contact (it is relatively new) is not fit for purpose being made of sheet steel with an area of razor sharpness. I am a chartered mechanical engineer and very disappointed that equipment of this standard is being installed where a child can injure themselves. My daughter was distraught and it marred the baptism celebration for everyone. What should be my next steps?
